Too Many Code Frameworks?

I’ll just admit it right now, I’m actually one of those weirdos that doesn’t think you can have “too many frameworks”. I believe the existence of so many frameworks has really been a big help to the programming community.

Most programmers like to do things themselves, which means that the same process is often repeated many times in different ways. While this is bad for the individual (often re-inviting the wheel) the coding community greatly benefits from this practice. When all is said and done, programmers can look over all the design patterns given and choose the best one knowing that many other styles have already been tried and this method has proven most successful.

Likewise, as time goes on new improved methods may be discovered via this same process helping to further improve and define optimum practices. You could say that re-inventing the wheel keeps the wheel evolving. If no-one had ever started the open source “rubber wheel framework” - would we all still be using wooden wheels?

“I don’t have a problem with Dreamweaver per se, and I still use it (although I’m constantly looking for a suitable alternative) but I strongly believe that using the WYSWYG interface for design inhibits good designers from realizing their full potential. I am basically saying that there is too much emphasis placed on designers to have Dreamweaver skills, when the reality is, at least from where I sit, saying you have Dreamweaver skills is essentially admitting you need WYSYWG to design a web page, and that means you’re not comfortable hand coding.”
